What if I want to be the Designated Broker of a real estate agency?
A Broker license authorizes you to perform all brokerage services on behalf of an agency, including serving as the agency’s designated broker. The broker license is issued for two years and is renewable.
To apply for the Broker license you must:
- Provide documentation that the you have been licensed as an associate broker affiliated with a real estate brokerage agency for 2 years within the 5 years immediately preceding the date of application submitted to the Commission.
- Complete the 45 hour Designated Broker Course with a grade of 75% or above
- Apply to the Maine Real Estate Commission

The Designated Broker Course is a 45-hour course approved by the Maine Real Estate Commission to fulfill the educational requirements of obtaining a Real Estate Broker license in the state of Maine. It is offered as an engaging, interactive discussion led by an instructor with years of experience as a Designated Broker running very successful real estate brokerage offices and companies in Maine.
Upon completion of this course, the licensee will have the fundamental knowledge and skill to open a real estate office. The licensee will understand the designated broker’s supervisory role as well as the obligations to licensees, clients, customers and the public.
It is also approved for 18 clock hours of CE so it makes a great refresher course for licensees already holding a broker license!
Effective September 12, 2009, an applicant for a real estate broker license must satisfactorily complete this course within one year of the date of submission of the license application to the Commission and provide documentation that the applicant has been licensed as an associate broker affiliated with a real estate brokerage agency for 2 years within the 5 years immediately preceding the date of application submitted to the Commission.
