About the Class
The Designated Broker Course is a 50-hour program approved by the Maine Real Estate Commission as meeting the criteria for getting a Maine Broker real estate license, and to serve as a Designated Broker. It is also approved for 18 clock hours of CE for Broker and Designated Broker license renewals. The course covers business planning, creating a company policy manual, risk management, ethical issues, how to set up an effective training program, and more. In unique TRELG fashion, it is offered in a "blended" format where you complete online self-study at your own pace and attend workshops in the classroom or via Livestream. Less than 20 hours of seat time, including your Final Exam! You begin your online work as soon as you register for the class and attend the workshops as scheduled in each class offering (see below).
- There is no textbook, and there are no "state" or "national" exams after you complete the course.
- Complete your required online self-study -- videos, audio clips, animations, knowledge checks, case studies, and scored quizzes -- at your own pace, in accordance with the student workbook we provide to you.
- Attend the live or livestream workshops as scheduled.
- Take a 2-hour Final Exam proctored by your instructor in person at the end of your last workshop, or as scheduled.
About our Instructor
Geoff MacLean has been licensed in Maine since 1983. He has been involved in thousands of real estate transactions and lead multiple companies as a Designated Broker and sales manager. Beginning in 2003 he spent 6 years supervising several hundred agents as Designated Broker of one of Maine's largest real estate companies. Currently, he divides his time among his partnership at TRELG, actively representing buyers and sellers as part of the North Star Realty, and acting as a consultant to licensees and company owners as well as an expert witness in broker liability lawsuits. Licensees appreciate the wealth of experience, energy, good humor and real-life examples Geoff brings to his teaching.
Eligibility
You must have been licensed as an Associate Broker affiliated with a real estate brokerage agency for 2 years within the past 5 years immediately preceding the date of application submitted to the Commission. The 2 years do not need to be consecutive but must have been within the 5-year period prior to your application date. You must also complete the Designated Broker Course with a minimum final grade of 75% and include your Designated Broker Course Completion Certificate with the license application. The Course Completion Certificate is valid for up to 1 year from the course completion date.
In addition, a licensed real estate broker may act as the designated broker for an agency and, as such, is responsible for the actions of the agency and its associates or employees.

This is what our students are saying about this course:
"Hi Geoff, thank you for a great broker class. I think I was a little stunned after the course and test but it all went well!! I am so glad I took it and you kept us all going and laughing. Much appreciated."
"Geoff MacLean is a Maine treasure. I am licensed in MA and NH and neither of those states prepare you for the challenges, strategies, and logistics of operating a brokerage as a designated broker like Maine licensing law and Geoff's years of experience do. I'm not sure people can appreciate the education and opportunity that TRELG offers without the perspective of operating in the dark in other states. Thank you Geoff. The in-the-trenches examples are invaluable. I was not required to take this course, because I hold the Designated Broker position in two other states, but I wanted to make sure we could operate at the highest level. This is is the single best course I have taken in my several decade career. If you never want to be the designated broker, but you value best practices and operating at the highest level, take Geoff's class. You won't regret it."
