Reciprocity (Out-of-State Licensees)

Already licensed elsewhere? You may qualify for a Maine license without repeating full education requirements.

You’ll need to:
✔ Hold an active license in good standing
✔ Pass the Maine Law Exam (required for all reciprocity applicants)
✔ Affiliate with a Maine-licensed agency
✔ Meet the basics: age 18+, high school diploma/equivalent, completed application

Licenses are valid for 2 years, with a $100 application fee and $21 background check fee.

Reactivation of Inactive Maine License

If you hold an inactive Maine license, you can return to active status:

  • Inactive up to 2 years → 21 hours of CE

  • 2–4 years inactive → 28 hours of CE

  • 4–6 years inactive → 36 hours of CE

  • 6+ years inactive → Must pass the Maine Law Exam
